CURRENT SITUATION
Student Body Baraka Technical College currently trains 250 students, thereof 170 girls and 80 boys. Since the college started out as an all girls vocational centre there are two times more girls enrolled than boys today. Youths above 14 years of age are enrolled to take two years vocational skills training which helps them to cope with the competitive world making them marketable and equipped – able to lift the burden of poverty off their families’ shoulders. Since the birth of this centre over 2000 young men and women have graduated with the majority of them utilizing the skill they acquired to earn their living – each year 180 graduates are releasedto the community. Many of them are working in different companies in EPZ Athi river, Industrial area, Ruaraka, East African Breweries Ltd, while others keep small scale businesses in the surrounding towns e.g. Matuu, Sofia, Kithimani, Ndalani and are now supporting their relatives. In addition another eight children from of zero to thirteen years are taken care of at the orphan centre at Makutano, a sub-unit of Baraka Technical College. This centre acts as a home for orphaned children offering them parental love and shelter. Students undergoing training at baraka technical college pose for a group photo (click to see the photo). with Baraka members of staff . To extend the support of the college beyond the period of enrollment a follow-up programme for the students was introduced. The programme links all current students and graduates helping them to stay united, share ideas and encourage one another. To enable a vital exchange each December a meeting known as Baraka Forum is organized to eat together, listen to experts’ presentations and identify needs as well as problems. The management also assists them through guidance and counseling in matters of life e.g. in case of death or marriage – the college stands as a family. Majors and Extracurricular Activities At present Baraka Technical College offers six majors: 1. Tailoring & Dressmaking 2. Hair Dressing & Beauty Therapy 3. Motor Vehicle Mechanics, Electrics, Drivers’ Education 4. Arch Welding In order to provide physical and mental balance and communicate the importance of teamwork the College also offers extracurricular activities such as volleyball and football but also encourages the students to find counterbalance in singing, dancing and worshipping.
